The Grossing technician provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a Board Certified, licensed medical doctor (Pathologist). Grossing technician is required to gross and dictate gastrointestinal biopsies, small biopsies (including cores), prostate cores, and any small tissue. Grossing technicians serves as the eyes of the pathologists and is often the initial (and sometimes only) individual to look at the specimen when it arrives from the operating room, clinic and/or physician’s office. Grossing Technician’s contribute to the overall efficiency of the laboratory or pathology practice in a cost effective manner by performing a variety of tasks, consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens.
Required Skills
·Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation and to provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner.
·Proficiency in preparing and maintaining records and in use of electronic communications tools and software.
·Knowledge/ability to become knowledgeable in voice recognition software, internet and multiple-interfaced systems, various laboratory information systems, Excel, and MS Word or equivalent applications.
·High degree of technical competence and knowledge of histological techniques.
•Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds which also includes experience working with students, staff, and faculty, with a higher or lower education level
•Ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines
•Demonstrated ability to organize workload
•Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision
•Ability to take direction and use independent judgment to coordinate and meet multiple deadlines
•Familiarity with HIPAA and security compliance requirements.
Required Experience
Required:
- A minimum of an Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution,OR
- Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60
semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution.
Preferred:
·Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macro surgical techniques, and general laboratory skills
